Working alongside the World Anti-Doping Agency, evidence was uncovered of urine swapping and advance warning of drug tests being given to players. No firm proof was uncovered of attempts to mask the use of performance-enhancing substances but World Rugby did find evidence that urine sample substitutions had taken place to conceal non-performance-enhancing substances such as cannabis and tramadol.

The Italian biathlete Rebecca Passler rejoined her team at the Winter Olympics on Monday after a successful appeal against a suspension handed out before the Milano Cortina Games for an alleged doping violation. Athletic Bilbao defender Yeray Alvarez has been banned for 10 months by Uefa for failing a doping test. The 30-year-old tested positive for banned substance canrenone following a 3-0 defeat by Manchester United in the Europa League semi-finals in May. Canrenone is a diuretic that can sometimes be used as a masking agent. Spaniard Alvarez said in July that he mistakenly ingested the substance when taking a preventative medicine for hair loss which contained canrenone.
