Intensely cold air is scouring the central and eastern U.S. again and will send temperatures plummeting all the way to the tip of Florida. Along with this new Arctic incursion, a major bomb cyclone storm is strengthening off the coast of the Carolinas, potentially bringing rare blizzard conditions to the region. Some areas haven't seen this amount of accumulating snow in over 30 years, wrote the National Weather Service's office in Wilmington, N.C., on Facebook.
This warning highlights the risk of disruptive snow showers and icy surfaces, particularly in northern and eastern areas, with impacts on travel and potential hazards for the public. We expect this cold spell to persist into the weekend and on into next week, with further warnings possible as temperatures remain well below average and snow showers continue in places.
The hiking group was trekking in the backcountry when a blizzard swept across the area. According to Tom Player, who spoke with British newspaper the Guardian, the tourists were concerned about the weather conditions ahead of the trek, but were told by staff that there was no reason the hike could not go ahead. Nine people went missing on Monday last week, as heavy snowfall and winds of up to 120 miles per hour swept across the Patagonian range.
