Blizzard conditions are now expected as a nor'easter races toward the metropolitan area Sunday and threatens to drop as much as 18 inches in some spots, according to the latest projections from the National Weather Service. Forecasters say snow will begin moving into New York and North Jersey Sunday morning, with conditions deteriorating through the afternoon. Whiteouts and wind gusts topping 50 miles per hour are expected Sunday night into Monday morning.
Last week alone, parts of western Switzerland were buried under 1 to 1.5 meters (3 to 5 feet) of snow. Another meter fell this week in some regions, pushing fresh storm totals to as much as 2.5 meters (8 feet). The new snow has helped erase what had been a snow-poor winter in the west, with snow depths in some areas now well above seasonal averages.
Yosemite National Park is closed through Friday because of impacts from the winter storm, including heavy snowfall and heavy trees. The National Park Service announced Thursday that the park is closed and that visitors with lodging reservations may still enter the park through Highway 140 at the Arch Rock entrance. Since Monday, Yosemite Valley and the park has received about 4 feet of snow and up to 52 inches in some areas, according to the National Weather Service in Hanford.
We arrived just before the gondola started loading and crammed in. Not all the lifts were open right away, so we skied deep lower mountain powder until the Cote Chevalier lift opened for business around 9:30 am. We happened to arrive just as ski patrol was dropping a rope into a huge zone. We dropped first and this run gave us a sense of the day ahead. Very deep, fluffy, incredible snow that had fallen straight down with no wind.
As Utah's winter season has been anything but normal, Solitude Mountain is scaling back its parking reservations. On Fridays, you no longer need a reservation, and parking on those days is now free until the end of the season. Importantly, while paid parking and reservations are no longer required on Friday, they are still required for Saturday and Sunday. If you plan to hit Solitude over the weekends, you should still plan ahead to reserve a spot.
When the numbers were added up, the Green Mountain State took the crown with a score of 9.49 out of a possible ten. With an average of 81.2 inches of snowfall annually, Vermont's precipitation was bested by only two other states in the top ten-Wyoming with 91.4 inches and New York with an impressive 123.8 inches. Temperatures from December through February hover around a frosty 19.4 degrees, perfect for maintaining snow accumulation on trails throughout the season.
WeatherNew Zealand's Southern Alps see a small, wet early-week storm that peaks on Tuesday, with Mt Hutt and Mount Dobson leading totals. Snow levels start high Monday night near 6,200-6,600 feet, then drop into the 4,700-5,000 feet range on Tuesday as temperatures settle near freezing, improving the odds of snow reaching lower mountain elevations. Snow quality stays on the heavy side with SLRs mostly around 6-7:1, so expect dense, moisture-rich snow rather than light powder, and moderate southeast winds add some exposed-ridge bite.
Toronto is under a yellow snowfall warning with 10 centimetres of snow expected to affect the morning and evening commute on Wednesday. An Alberta clipper, a low pressure system, is forecast to bring the snow starting Wednesday morning and easing in the afternoon, Environment Canada said in the warning issued late Tuesday afternoon. Visibility could be poor at times if the snow is heavy or blowing, the agency says.
After a lean start to this season, the Montana clouds finally opened up, dropping 11 inches of snow over the last 3 days at Big Sky Resort. This snowfall, mixed with some high alpine wind, left the slopes immaculate for the Bluebird day this past Sunday. While coverage on certain portions of the mountain remained spotty, if you know where to look, some fresh untracked snow was your reward.
Arapahoe Basin announced that its iconic Pallavicini Chair will begin operating for the season on Saturday, January 10, marking a major milestone in the resort's winter buildup. The lift is expected to open around midday, providing access to Grizzly Road, West Wall, and Slalom Slope, along with limited openings on Challenger, Scudder, and Radical.The resort emphasized in a press release shared with SnowBrains that limited openings allow ski patrol to open terrain temporarily
A busy January 5-9 stretch brings frequent light-to-moderate refreshers across the Northern Rockies, with the deepest totals focused on Idaho and the Tetons while snow quality trends better and better as the week turns colder. Snow levels start relatively higher in parts of Idaho early in the window, then steadily crash through midweek, flipping more of the precipitation to snow and boosting snow-to-liquid ratios into the 14-20:1 range for a noticeably drier, fluffier feel late Wednesday into Thursday;
Londoners might not have got a white Christmas, but it looks as though 2026 could kick off with a blast of snow for parts of the UK. And that includes the capital. Snow is notoriously hard to predict, but some early forecasts for this weekend (January 3-4) are saying that temperatures in the capital city could fall below freezing, accompanied by a flurry of the white stuff. So, prepare to wrap up, slip on your wellies and (maybe) dust off that toboggan.
West Virginia sits within the Appalachian region in the Almanac's forecast, which includes major cities in neighboring states like Roanoke, Harrisburg, and Scranton. This area is expected to experience below-normal temperatures throughout the winter, with the coldest stretches coming in mid- and late December, early and late January, and early February. Precipitation levels should run below normal, but snowfall will vary sharply by location. Northern parts of the region-including West Virginia's higher elevations-may see lighter totals, while southern mountain areas could be in for heavier, wetter snow. The snowiest periods are projected for late December, late January, and early to late February, with a possible encore in mid-March.
