this is the first actual proper major Sondheim revival to be staged in this country since the great man's passing. And the main thing worth saying about 1986's Into the Woods is that it's the work of a genius at the peak of his powers: a clever send up of fairytales that pushes familiar stories into absurd, existential, eventually very moving territory. It's both playful and profound, mischievous and sincere, cleverly meta but also a ripping yarn.

Tarantino listed his 20 favorite movies on The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, and when discussing his no. 5 pick, Paul Thomas Anderson's There Will Be Blood, he had a shocking view of Paul Dano's performance as twins Paul & Eli Sunday. The teaser begins by regaling the audience with all the ways the original Pump Rulers entertained us through the years. It starts with Stassi Schroeder promising in the show's very first episode that "I am the devil, and don't you forget it" and ends with Scandoval. That's probably a mistake. Any trailer would suffer by comparison to 11 years' worth of great moments, and this one is no exception.

There was just one problem.

Beginning an episode of television with an appearance by Becky Ann Baker is a powerful move. It garnered a ten-minute standing ovation in my living room. And then to see her be joined by her real-life husband, Dylan Baker? What a gift! Not to mention that these are quite literally Karen Cartwright's parents on Smash. This is history. But this quick glimpse of them at the episode's start is just a tease.
