Philosophers on Children
Great philosophers across history have written varied, often surprising insights about babies and children, addressing innocence, education, political roles, and child development.
When we think of rituals, we tend to think of face masks and wellness trends. But there are actually ways to use rituals to help heal grief and deal with stressful times. On this episode, Lucy Lopez, Elizabeth Newcamp, and Zak Rosen are joined by ritual expert Betty Ray to talk about creative ways to help children process grief and big emotions, how to use ritual to create safety and expression, and much more.
In all the dystopian visions of the future that the movies have trotted out over the last few decades, the one that sticks the most, surprisingly, is WALL-E. That's not just because of the chastening sight of an over-polluted Earth or those sedentary humans glued to their screens. It's because those quite plausible possibilities mean something different in a kids movie. It's their future, after all.
All UK children could be offered screening for type 1 diabetes using a simple finger-prick blood test, say researchers who have been running a large study. Currently, many young people go undiagnosed and risk developing a life-threatening complication called diabetic ketoacidosis that needs urgent hospital treatment. Identifying diabetes earlier could help avoid this and mean treatments to control problematic blood sugar levels can be given sooner.
We are all programmed to nurture and protect our kids, so this step may feel like it goes against our parental instincts. And yet being a parent also means being honest and responsible. What's more, you are your children's most important role model. In sharing this news, you have an opportunity to demonstrate both vulnerability and resilience. It's important to communicate a balance of "this is a sad time" and "we are going to get through this."
Who's on the other end of your walkie-talkie?My friend. We're using it to say where we are so we don't get lost or anything. I like the cheetahs on your pajamas. They're jaguars. Do you learn a lot about animals in school? Not that much, but I already know a lot. Just ask me some specific questions and I'll answer. Do you know what the biggest cat is? A tiger!
Durst's second book, " The Four Pillars," was made largely during the COVID pandemic. Its ambiguously staged scenes, many involving a New Age self-help group that Durst had been following since the church-basement days, leaned into the strained artificiality of the period. Taking the pictures in "The Children's Melody" felt like "a return to the world," in all its baffling complexity, Durst told me.
Some kids start their mornings with cereal and cartoons, but my daughters start theirs with rubber boots and feed pails. In 2010, I moved to a cattle and grain farm in east-central Alberta, Canada, to be with my now-husband. Fifteen years later, our two daughters - who are 13 and 12 - have never known another home. Life here is unconventional, especially compared to my previous lifestyle in the city, because there's always work to do.
"It's my puppy," London said in the footage. "It's your puppy," answered Hilton. "Do you love her? Isn't she beautiful? She loves you." While the kids giggle, the dog zooms around the room. "You want her to chase you?" Hilton asked Phoenix. "Run around, she'll chase you. She'll go chase you!"
The hardest thing in the world is when your children have problems. There have been so many hits on our family that no one knows about, and I don't want them to, for my family's sake. I've made some interesting movies, and I've been very satisfied with the work, but if someone wrapped it all up and said to me, 'What's your greatest achievement?' I'd say, 'The children. They're the best thing in my life'.
The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's Office confirmed that the two girls who died after a barge collided with a sailboat in Miami Beach accidentally drowned, specifically identifying them as Mila Yankelevich and Erin Victoria Ko Han.
