On Me, a digital gift card startup founded by former Google employees, is aiming to redefine the gift card industry with its mobile-first gifting platform that lets users purchase digital gift cards categorized by interests rather than being restricted to specific retailers. The company on Thursday said it had raised $6 million in a seed funding round, which it will use to expand its gift categories to include things like horseback riding lessons, wine tastings, and theme park trips.

I've been using , a digital gift card provider that allows you to send e-gift cards any way you like, whether it's via email, text, a printed QR code, or even social media. But On Me cards aren't like regular gift cards. Instead of choosing one store, you choose one of several categories, like Beauty, Dinner, Gaming, or Camping. When the recipient opens the gift card, they get to choose which store they'd like to spend the card at.

With no official announcement, Google has launched a digital gift card store where you can purchase cards from dozens of different retailers, including restaurants, beauty, entertainment, home, and more. To access the shop, you can go directly to this link or search "gift cards" in the Play Store (you will see some apps pop up if you choose the latter option, but look for a "Find the perfect gift on Google Play" banner). You can only access the store through an Android device, though. When I tried to access it on my computer, I got a message that it wasn't available.
