The death knell for the Palestinian village of Atouf, on the western slopes of the Jordan valley, arrived in the form of a trail of paper, a series of eviction notices taped to homes, greenhouses and wells, marking a straight line across the open fields. The notices, which appeared overnight, informed the local farmers that their land would be confiscated and that they had seven days from the date of their delivery, 4 December, to vacate their properties.

As evictions climb to pre-pandemic levels, most New Yorkers facing eviction may not be getting the legal representation they are entitled to, according to a new report from the New York City Independent Budget Office. The report, released Thursday, highlights ongoing challenges with the city's Right to Counsel program, which promises free legal counsel to low-income tenants facing eviction. But the report finds that only a fraction-30 percent-of eligible tenants got full legal representation under the program last year.

But Mission Local had a bombshell revelation in April 2024, when they found that a rogue property manager at those buildings was simply collecting tenants' rent in cash and pocketing it for himself. But the city was not sympathetic to those tenants' plight, and started sending them eviction notices last August. Still, the tenants are making legal cases that they did pay rent, and their eviction cases might drag on in court for months, if not years.
