Having opened on Broadway in 2019, part of the reason it's taken a while to cross the pond is that a big theatre is needed to contain it and there aren't many of those free over here. Fellow US smash MJ the Musical previously nipped in to claim the Prince Edward Theatre, but the Michael Jackson jukebox joint will be offski in the new year.
If you're a parent who's somehow made it through the last few weeks without hearing about KPop Demon Hunters, you must be some kind of unicorn. An animated Sony production that dropped on Netflix late this summer, KPop Demon Hunters is a global juggernaut, rising seemingly out of nowhere to become the most-watched original title in the streamer's history and topping the box office with its "one weekend only" sing-along theatrical debut.
Yet, I laughed harder - and certainly more often - during opening night of "Shucked" at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco than I did while watching any of those other entirely worthy productions. There are 498,735 jokes (give or take) in this 2022 musical, which received nine nominations - including for Best Musical - at the 76th Tony Awards. And roughly 498,736 of jokes work (do the math and you'll see what I did there) in "Shucked," which is making its West Coast debut at the Curran.
As trans rights and freedoms are in jeopardy, revisiting this story feels timely and necessary. We need more stories that show folks...
