Kylian Mbappé criticized Marine Le Pen’s far-right party, prompting sharp rebuttals from Jordan Bardella and other National Rally figures.
A French court on Friday handed a suspended sentence to a 74-year-old man who last year broke an egg on the head of the leader of France's main far-right party -- and possible presidential candidate -- Jordan Bardella. It also ordered the retired farmer, identified in court as Jean-Paul, to pay a €1,000 ($1,160) fine, as well as damages to Bardella of €500 for harming his image and €600 to contribute to his legal fees.
Sarkozy's comments in The Diary of a Prisoner come as Le Pen's party appeals to traditional right voters in an attempt to broaden its base ahead of the 2027 presidential race. The comments were in stark contrast to Sarkozy's stance against the far right when he won the presidency in 2007, and his call in 2022 for voters to back the centrist Emmanuel Macron against Le Pen in the interests of France at the last presidential election.
