Midway through the third period of Columbus's 2-0 loss to the Washington Capitals, Gaunce was caught with a high stick from Caps forward Hendrix Lapierre in front of Washington's net. Lapierre, intending to lift Gaunce's stick, drilled the opposing centerman right in the mouth with the lower shaft of his twig. Good, solid effort all around. I thought we played a smart game. It is a good team over there. They have a lot of good offense and fast players. Through five games, the 24-year-old Swede has averaged just 11:45 TOI - more than five minutes below last year's season average of 16:52. Holmstrom has recorded an assist on opening night, but has been held pointless since, and is a -4 on the season. Perhaps the most discouraging statistic for Holmstrom is his two shots on the season. While some may be worried about his inability to get pucks through towards the net this season, Patrick Roy sees no cause for concern.

"The PK stuff was actually pretty nice to get some reps in there," Garand said after the Rangers' 5-3 victory.

The Rangers special teams construction and deployment will undergo an overhaul, including the need for a new net-front man on the power play.
