Once upon a time, when you ran Windows on your desktop, it was your desktop. Oh, the IT department might have called the shots on how much you could do with it, but you could write what you needed to, and it was all kept nicely on your PC or your choice of network drive. Those days are long gone.
Findings from the company's 2025 State of Developer Ecosystem report show 85% of developers globally regularly use AI for activities such as coding. Similarly, nearly two-thirds (62%) use at least one AI coding assistant, agent, or code editor in their daily workflow. Yet drilling down into regional and national perception of the technology, it appears many UK developers aren't fully sold. More than a quarter (27%), for example, said they're still "uncertain" about the use of AI.
Anxiety over security and privacy were up 11 percent from last year, while concerns over ethical AI and transparency also ticked up. In addition, there was a massive drop-off in hype compared to last year, when buzzy AI research startups dominated headline after headline. In 2024, scientists surveyed said they believed AI was already surpassing human abilities in over half of all use cases. In 2025, that belief dropped off a cliff, falling to less than a third.
