Job search advice that helped one Gen Zer land interviews at Uber, Meta, Amazon, and Salesforce
"Mandal's career journey - which would include interviews at Uber, Meta, Amazon, and Salesforce - began when she moved to the US from India in 2021 to pursue a master's in engineering management at Northwestern University. After graduating in January 2023, she began working full-time in March of that yearas a product manager at a consulting firm in Chicago - before leaving for a senior product manager role at a healthcare company that November."
"The position was remote, with team members spread across the country. In her first few months on the job, Mandal said she missed working with people in person - and the time zone differences made it even harder to connect with colleagues. At the same time, she kept hearing about tech meetups and professional events happening regularly in San Francisco - opportunities she said were harder to find in Chicago."
"There was also the unavoidable buzz around generative AI, the future of which seemed increasingly centered in the Bay Area. San Francisco, she realized, was where she needed to be. So she started planning a move, with the goal of eventually landing an AI-focused role at a large tech company. "I felt like, as a tech person, I had to be in San Francisco," said the 29-year-old."
Karishma Mandal moved from Chicago to San Francisco to pursue AI work at a large tech company. She studied engineering management at Northwestern, worked in product roles in Chicago, and found remote work limiting due to time zones and lack of in-person interaction. She pursued in-person networking, meetups, and professional events in the Bay Area to connect with recruiters and peers. She interviewed with Uber, Meta, Amazon, and Salesforce, and ultimately accepted a product manager role at Salesforce. She targeted the Bay Area for generative AI opportunities and used multiple job-search strategies to make connections and secure interviews.
