San Mateo County Sheriff Christina Corpus will remain sheriff for two weeks even if the Board of Supervisors votes to remove her. Corpus and her lawyers asked Superior Court Judge Nira Shapirshteyn to halt the supervisors from removing her for alleged corruption. Shapirshteyn ruled today that since the board has not had its final vote, she can't issue a halt to Corpus' removal at this point.

A California bill now awaiting Gov. Gavin Newsom's (D) signature would set a pathway to eliminate the state's trailblazing moratorium on pipelines used to transport carbon dioxide. The fossil fuel industry lobbied to shape the Democrat-sponsored legislation, which could allow such pipelines to be constructed without strict distance requirements around communities and sensitive wildlife habitats - raising fears that leaks or ruptures of the asphyxiant gas could occur close to people's homes.

The multi-million dollar effort to remove public access to police radio communications across the East Bay has a new start date, roughly a month after similar plans were undone by a technology snafu. Every law enforcement agency in Contra Costa County including all police departments and the county's sheriff's office will end public access to their radio chatter on Oct. 7, said David Swing, head of the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority. Nearly every such agency in Alameda County plans to follow suit on Oct. 9, he said. The only holdout appears to be the Berkeley Police Department, which vowed last month to keep their conversations public.

For a group of California hikers, a fall excursion into the Sierra Nevada turned into a terrifying experience last week when they heard multiple gunshots and experienced bullets whizzing by. At 1:50 p.m. on Friday, Mono County Dispatch received multiple calls from hikers on the Parker Lake Trail, near June Lake in the Sierra Nevada, the Mono County Sheriff's Office reported. The hikers reported shots fired in their vicinity. The dispatcher could hear the sound of gunshots on the phone call.

The report described a clash between male juveniles that led an alleged negligent discharge of a firearm, San Jose police said in a news release Tuesday.
