George Washington University is set to implement a $100 mandatory fee for full-time undergraduates and eligible graduate students, granting them unlimited access to Metro rail and bus services for the spring semester. This initiative, effective from January, is part of the U-Pass program, which aims to enhance student mobility and accessibility in D.C. The university has partnered with Metro and is also contributing additional funding to support the initiative. Discussions are ongoing with other regional universities to expand the program further, amid some hesitations regarding costs from nearby institutions.
"I strongly believe that one of the things that makes the D.C. region America's greatest college town is our wonderful Metro transit system, and the U-Pass program could be a tremendous asset in maximizing that asset."
"So far, many schools in the District and its suburbs have balked at those current costs. Trinity Washington University President Patricia McGuire said she doesn't want her school to be charged for every full-time student regardless of whether those students use Metro."
