According to the ESPN broadcast, Hernandez's back tightened up, forcing him to exit the game. Hernandez exited the game in the bottom of the seventh inning when the Dodgers led 8-2. He was replaced by Alex Call, who hit an RBI single and remained in the game in the outfield. Hernandez was 2-for-3 before exiting the game, and was getting the start in left field despite the right-handed Hunter Greene starting for Cincinnati.
This day in Los Angeles Dodgers history saw Sandy Koufax break the National League record for strikeouts in a season on Sept. 27, 1961. The left-hander surpassed Christy Mathewson, who held the previous mark with 267 during the 1903 campaign. Koufax struck out seven batters over eight innings pitched in a 2-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. It was the Hall of Famer's final start of the 1961 season, finishing with a then-record 269 strikeouts.
After two very winnable games that became two very brutal losses to start the series against the Phillies, the same formula repeated itself in the finale. The Dodgers jumped out to an early lead, Blake Snell was dominant, and it looked like they would cruise to victory ... and this time they actually did?! They tacked on a pair of insurance runs late, and the pen pitched two scoreless as they managed to salvage a 5-0 win from a series they arguably should've swept.
