Over 1/4 of S.F.'s arrests or citations for drugs now come from 16th and Mission
Briefly

In March 2025, the San Francisco Police Department increased its presence at the 16th and Mission BART plaza, leading to over 520 drug-related arrests or citations, the highest since 2018. This small area, representing just 0.2% of the city's land, was responsible for nearly 27% of the city's drug arrests that month. Despite this crackdown, local residents describe the situation as worsening, characterizing their surroundings with terms like 'drug carnival' and 'zombie graveyard,' highlighting the ongoing challenge of drug activity in the area.
This area encompasses alleys - like Weise and Caledonia streets - that have become notorious for overt drug use.
Residents called the alleys nearby 'hell every single hour of every single day,' a 'zombie graveyard,' and a 'drug carnival.'
In March 2025, however, drug arrests and citations from the plaza soared to 27 percent of the citywide total.
The Mission police captain and San Francisco's police chief have also acknowledged that police operations in places like the Tenderloin have brought new actors to the Mission.
