NYPD: Crime down for 7th month, but some categories inch up in April
Briefly

In April 2025, New York City's overall index crime decreased by 3% compared to April 2024, continuing a seven-month trend of declining crime rates. Significant reductions were reported in robbery (-13.5%), burglary (-9.6%), and grand larceny (-4%). However, there were increases in specific crime categories, including three more murders compared to last year, along with a rise in shooting incidents and victims. Public housing crime increased by 1.6% in April but remains down 6.4% year-to-date, while bias incidents and rape surged by 30% each.
Crime is down for the seventh month in a row, and that's the direct result of the strategies we've put in place and the tireless work of the men and women of the NYPD.
While murder rates are down this year in general, there were three more murders in April 2025 (28 vs. 25) than in the same month last year.
