In 2023, Sheryl Lawless pursued Kenneth Mattson for $25,000 after he sold her late father's Datsun without paying her. Tiring of the chase, she reported him to authorities, which finally led to her receiving payment. As Mattson's business collapsed, he was indicted for a Ponzi scheme, allegedly defrauding dozens of investors over many years. Lawless expressed relief at seeing justice served, highlighting the broader impact of his fraudulent activities on numerous victims across California.

He received over $10 million in startup capital from at least 19 original investors and scammed at least $24 million out of at least 75 victims.
