SFU Stadium / Perkins+Will
Briefly

The newly opened Simon Fraser University Stadium embodies a long-held vision for a community gathering space. It features 1,823 formal seats under a striking cantilevered roof, along with over 300 informal seating options. This design encourages diverse use beyond athletic events, which occur only 20 days annually. The complex roof posed engineering challenges but resulted in a seamless integration of functional elements. The stadium's overall design aims to enhance student engagement and create a focal point for university life.
The stadium's cantilevered canopy isn't just functional, it symbolizes SFU's athletic spirit while providing essential shelter for spectators during events.
Despite facing numerous engineering challenges, the design team successfully created a multifunctional space that fosters community engagement beyond athletics.
