The Swiss Glacier Monitoring Network (GLAMOS) is reporting an average snow deficit of 25%, compared to averages from 2010-2020, partly due to a warm and dry month of April this season. Specifically, the regions of Upper Valais, Ticino, and Graubünden are seeing a drastic deficit heading into the summer melt months. Consequently, the protective snow layer is depleting so rapidly, it could be a matter of just weeks before debris and bare ice are exposed, leading to an inevitable accelerated glacier melt and retreat.

It is the second fatal avalanche in as many days, after a mountain guide died on Friday morning, May 8, while climbing the north face of the Aiguille d'Olan, in the Écrins massif. According to initial information, the men triggered a windslab avalanche just 20 meters (66 feet) from the summit. The avalanche swept him around 400 meters (1,300 feet) down the mountain.

America's only summer-only ski area, Beartooth Basin, Montana, is preparing to open for the season after already receiving 29 inches of snow this spring. The ski area is planning to open between Friday, May 22, and Monday, May 25, depending on weather conditions. This season will be the resort's 64th summer ski season - a tradition dating back to the mid-1960s.
The resubmitted plan calls for the installation of 12 drill pads on public land adjacent to the creek, bringing round-the-clock light pollution, dust, and heavy truck traffic to a region prized for its quiet, dark skies.
