With this album we wanted to try to make something that captured the physical space of our studios. Setting up loads of ways of processing, recording, re amping sounds.... 'The vocal isn't sitting quite right? Let's track it through an old tannoy speaker in the basement. That synth needs to twang harder? Let's play it through an old train station announcement speaker from the 1930s.' We ran tape over magnets, blew up some speakers and finally utilised that dirt cheap overclocked FX unit we snaffled years ago in Bromley.
Roses serves as Widowspeak's seventh album and their first in four years following 2022's The duo, comprised of married couple Molly Hamilton and Robert Earl Thomas, also welcomed their first child in between albums. The new project was inspired by the minutiae of daily life, the significance of the insignificant, and everyday rituals.
We're at the point in our career where we've been to a lot of fancy parties in beautiful rooms with important people, and we know the particular sadness of realizing it doesn't make you feel better. We've learned the hard way that validation is hollow and we actually just want connection.
I wanted to explore catchy, melodic phrasing weaved throughout the intensity of the instrumentation and droney chord changes. All that I could reflect on was grief and hope; death and life; cause and effect; shared experiences of being a human person.
That whole year I just felt awful and like I was dying. I didn't feel right, and mentally I was off, like there really was something wrong the whole time. So I think the reason some of these songs feel the way they do is because I felt that way, even though I didn't know something was wrong yet.
Mitski has announced her new album, Nothing's About to Happen to Me, and revealed its lead single, "Where's My Phone?" Stream it below. Out on February 27th via Dead Oceans, Nothing's About to Happen to Me will feature Mitski accompanied by a live band and orchestra. According to a press release, the LP will find the singer "immersing herself in a rich narrative whose main character is a reclusive woman in an unkempt house."
