Let's take a look at what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works - Weekend Warm-up Show: Champions League Power Rankings - are we ready to place Bayern Munich in the top group? You know it! But...where does the squad stack up against Europe's other top teams. Let's discuss.
I was at the training ground that afternoon with Thomas Müller, Sven Ulreich, and Bouna Sarr. Then, in the evening, events unfolded rapidly. At some point, I read the news as a headline in BILD. It was like something out of a movie, and I thought to myself: 'Okay, where's the hidden camera?' I turned off my phone because I just wanted to be left alone.
Kimmich, knows, though, that when it has been good, it has rarely been this good during his time at Bayern Munich. "We built a basis for our game. I've said in the dressing room that this flow and momentum we're currently having did not come by chance. It's not because the opponents are bad, but because we're working hard every day on our basis and principles. Everyone is ready when they're needed," Kimmich said after Bayern Munich's 5-1 Champions League win over Pafos FC.
As most of you know, we offer a daily podcast titled "The Daily BPW Show" on our Patreon channel. If you want a discussion on what's going with Bayern Munich every day...we have you covered.
Bayern Munich swept aside FC Pafos in the former's second Champions League match to the tune of a 5-1 scoreline. Raphaël Guerreiro, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, and Harry Kane with two goals did the damage. Now it might have looked like an easy win (as Kane mentioned), Bayern coach Vincent Kompany thought it was the complete opposite. Pafos set up to launch counters against Bayern and they did make it difficult for the visitors, even scoring an outrageous goal that stumped Manuel Neuer.
Bayern Munich moved swiftly in the winter transfer window to sign Jonas Urbig. The young German goalkeeper is highly rated at Bayern. He is currently the deputy to Manuel Neuer. Urbig stepped up in the absence of Neuer during crucial games last season. Apart from Urbig, Bayern also have Alexander Nubel on their books. The former Schalke goalkeeper has been excelling for VfB Stuttgart during the last two seasons.
It's no big secret that we have a strong desire to extend Upamecano's contract. And as for the other players, a few contracts are expiring. Players who have been at FC Bayern for a long time. These are players who have a completely different perception, of themselves, but also of the team, of FC Bayern. And it's clear we're always thinking about that. When we think the time is right, we'll start the talks in calm and behind closed doors,
On the deadline day, Bayern added one more forward by signing Nicolas Jackson from Chelsea on a loan deal, which could turn into an obligation if certain conditions are met. Bayern have paid a hefty loan fee for Jackson. They can sign him for €65 million next summer if Jackson ends up starting 40 games across the competitions. As things stand, the obligation to buy option will unlikely materialize for Bayern. The decision to sign Jackson will depend on how he performs this season.
Bayern Munich endured a painful summer transfer window. They missed out on their top target, Florian Wirtz, early in the summer. After losing Wirtz to Liverpool, Bayern had failed pursuits of several other forwards like Bradley Barcola, Nick Woltemade, and Nico Williams. The record Bundesliga champions eventually decided to pursue a move for Liverpool forward Luis Diaz. The Colombian forward has been a fine player for the Merseyside club, but there was intense speculation around his future since the end of last season.
"I'll be honest, when this story with Woltemade and then the demands of Stuttgart came up, I, as well as Uli, Herbert Hainer, Jan Dreesen, and Max Eberl, said: 'Guys, we are reaching figures that I no longer find acceptable.' We shouldn't meet every demand to make someone happy, especially the financiers at Stuttgart. I can only congratulate the people in Stuttgart for finding - let me use quotation marks here - 'an idiot' who paid that much money, because we certainly wouldn't have done that in Munich," Rummenigge said during an appearance on BR24 (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
