A new report from the Center for American Progress and the Thurgood Marshall College Fund shows that historically Black colleges and universities receive a disproportionately low percentage of federal research and development funding. While HBCUs make up roughly 3 percent of all four-year higher ed institutions, they've received less than 3 percent of R&D funding since at least 2010, according to the report. In recent years, between 2018 and 2023, they were awarded less than 1 percent of R&D expenditures.
Interestingly, given this is an administration that has said they don't want race to be a factor in decision-making, they want to count up all the admissions decisions and disaggregate by race to see how that is all working out,
Thousands of revelers gathered in Harlem on Sunday for the 56th Annual African American Day Parade (AADP). The parade route stretched along Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Boulevard from 111th Street to 137th Street, featuring marching bands, community organizations, performance groups, floats, fraternities and sororities, civil servants, celebrities, and public leaders. The event was live-streamed by WABC 7. This year's theme-"Education is Our #1 Priority"-highlighted the importance of civic engagement.
Driving the news: The Education Department announced Monday it would direct nearly $500 million to HBCUs and tribal colleges and universities. The one-time investment is a nearly 50% increase in funding for HBCUs while it more than doubles the amount tribal colleges received. Several HBCUs did not respond to Axios' requests for comment. Driving the news: At least seven HBCUs went on lockdown on Thursday, including Alabama State University, Virginia State University, Hampton University, Spelman College, Southern University and A&M College, Clark Atlanta University, Bethune-Cookman. Some of the schools, including Spelman, Southern, Clark Atlanta and VSU have since lifted their shelter-in-place orders after no threats were found. It is not immediately clear if the threats are connected or racially motivated.
Driving the news: The Foundation to Combat Antisemitism (FCAS) tells Axios that the unity dinners will begin mid-September in New Orleans, bringing students together from Tulane, Xavier, Dillard and Loyola universities. Dinners will then continue in Baltimore, Washington D.C., Atlanta, Philadelphia and Houston as part of a 14-city tour. The effort will invite students from Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) as well as from schools like Rice, Temple and the University of Houston.
Since the 1980s, the executive director of the HBCUs initiative, established by President Jimmy Carter, has been responsible for advocating for HBCUs' federal policy interests.
Plenty of players have been standouts at HBCUs that have made differences in the league, but it is good that now at least I've created a branch from a front office standpoint in the NFL coming from an HBCU.
