We are pleased to release our eighth annual ranking of the Top Outside Counsel, featuring the law firms that clients depend on most. Every year since 2018, Above the Law has published a list of the top law firms in the country, based on the insights of those who know best - the in-house attorneys who hire them. This year, approximately 550 in-house lawyers participated in our survey, sharing their perspectives on the law firms their organizations work with.

Private practice lawyers were more than five times as likely as their in-house counterparts to choose hourly billing, while in-house counsel were more than twice as likely to choose value-based or outcome-driven pricing.

The city of Los Angeles received an $1.8-million invoice from Gibson Dunn for two weeks of work, equating to just under $140,000 per day over 13 days.

"We're striking along with all these other shops and together trying to improve the landscape for legal representation in New York City," Ryan Acquaotta, a campaign coordinator and shop steward at Urban Justice Center, said. "When everybody's doing it together, it's a lot harder to break the strike."

Larkin concluded nine years as city attorney, stating, "This has been for sure the most rewarding nine years of my career: being a part of a really fantastic community with co-workers who really care deeply about their work."

Perkins Coie stated that the layoffs "reflect the firm's long-term strategic goals and incorporate best practices from across the industry."

Support for the law firms that didn't make deals has been growing among corporate executives, with at least 11 big companies choosing to shift their work accordingly.

"Brooklyn will not tolerate scammers coming to our borough to prey on vulnerable Black and brown homeowners and steal their homes from right under their nose," said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.

Demand for legal services is expected to surge, with 83% of those surveyed anticipating increases, despite the rise of AI tools in the industry.
