OAKLAND A civilian oversight body with unprecedented authority over the city's police will allow officers significantly more flexibility in deciding whether to chase suspects at high speeds through city streets. In a unanimous vote, the Oakland Police Commission determined Thursday that police can initiate a pursuit over 50 miles per hour at their own discretion, so long as they receive a supervisor's permission for it soon afterward.

The mayor directed all city departments to guard the constitutional rights of Chicago residents "amidst the possibility of imminent militarized immigration or National Guard deployment by the federal government." When asked during a news conference about federal agents who are presumably "taking orders," Johnson replied: "Yeah, and I don't take orders from the federal government." Johnson also blocked Chicago police from wearing face coverings to hide their identities,

The incident has reignited discussions on the appropriateness of high-speed police chases, following the death of an innocent pedestrian during one such pursuit.
