Four people, including three children, were injured after a grizzly bear attacked a school group in a remote part of Canada. Two of the injured were in critical condition and two in serious condition, the Health Services Authority said Friday. All four remain hospitalized. The attack occurred on Thursday in the Bella Coola area of British Columbia (BC), when a bear charged a group of 20 children and their teachers.
I resigned this spring as a Democratic district leader in Westchester. I had to, since my husband and I made the unusual decision to return to the city long before our kids fled the nestthe local schools weren't safe for our trans 11-year-old. But, more importantly, I resigned because I am as disappointed in the Democratic Party as I am disillusioned by our experience in a solidly blue suburb.
How would a school shooting affect your employees? It's something that most employers never want to think about, but it's a horrifyingly real threat to any community-and the companies and organizations that do business there. Following the death of my youngest son, Dylan, in the 2012 Sandy Hook School shooting, I can tell you first-hand about the lasting trauma that occurs when your child is injured or killed in this type of tragedy-and how that ripples through the entire community.
A Braintree High School student was charged with with carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds and resisting arrest, among other charges, after allegedly bringing an airsoft gun to school on Monday. Another student reported to the School Resource Officer early on Monday that they had seen a student with a handgun, according to Braintree Police. The school went under a shelter-in-place so the officer and school staff could approach the student allegedly in possession of the gun, police say.
My parents were strict at home but at school people can airdrop you videos or show you their screen without invitation, to see your reaction. My school had a see it, hear it, lose it' policy, but in reality we just used them under the desk, in the toilets, during lunch break, in the playground, on the bus, even in the corridors. It was impossible for the teachers to stop us.
As a child, the Columbine school shooting impacted my elementary school experience and beyond. My naivete about safety was instantly shattered. It was the first time I realized that danger could come into a classroom at any moment. Years passed, and I became a mom. As my daughter approached school age, school rules changed, active shooter drills became the norm, and every parent dreaded the emergency call that their child's school was on lockdown. I didn't want to live in that daily state of worry.
Atlas, along with its father-and-son owners Gary and Matthew Weisenberg, were arraigned two years ago on numerous criminal charges in connection with illegal dumping and handling of hazardous waste from July 2020 and August 2022. A little more than a year later, a compressed gas canister ignited at the scrap yard, causing a fiery explosion on the first day of school, after which the district attorney's office filed additional charges against the defendants.
We are also immensely grateful to Gov. Newsom, Pro Tem Mike McGuire, Speaker Robert Rivas and to so many of our non-Jewish colleagues of both political parties who have stood as staunch allies in the fight against hate. Together, we will continue to fight to ensure that students of all faiths and backgrounds are safe, welcome, and can thrive in our schools.

The posts included images of firearms, ammunition, and a mapped-out plan for attacking the school. The district told ABC7 News, it was Menlo-Atherton High School. Law enforcement later detained the student and recovered weapons from their home.
There's no universal definition for a mass shooting, so data can vary based on the number of victims killed or injured, where the shooting took place, and whether it was related to gang activity or terrorism. For example, the Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium at the Rockefeller Institute of Government, a nonpartisan think tank, only tracks shootings that occur in public or populated places, involve at least two victims (injured or killed), and excludes incidents related to gang violence or terrorist activity. By their definition, there have been 12 mass shootings in 2025.

It's part of a demonstration outside the National School Safety Conference. "We use drones to stop school shootings," says Justin Marston, the CEO of Campus Guardian Angel, the company selling the drones. In the event of a shooting, remote pilots fly the drones, housed at the school, at the shooter. They shoot pepper balls and run the drones into the shooter to debilitate them.
M. holds a strand of her hair up. "Look", she says laughing, pointing at white streaks she says weren't there before this summer. It's been stressful, she says, holed up indoors with the kids. As she speaks, her youngest climbs on top of the washing machine and proceeds to throw about a hundred plastic Easter eggs on the floor; unbeknownst to her, the baby she's rocking is wildly waving a large bottle of glue.
Teachers no longer get daily briefings of interactions between police and young people, either as victims or perpetrators, as well as them having witnessed domestic violence. Ms West grew gasps after telling how she sent two welfare staff to a teenage truant's home unaware he'd he been charged and released on bail over a blade-wielding attempted murder. Scotland Yard is being forced into substantial tough choices amid a 260 million budget shortfall.
