NEW YORK -- Digital Girl is empowering inner city youth, especially young girls, to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). Founded in 2014 and based in Bedford-Stuyvesant, the nonprofit serves students across all five boroughs. More than 6,000 students have learned computer science since its inception. The nonprofit is on a mission to close the gender and diversity gap in the tech industry through its hands-on, engaging STEM programming.

Foothill College physics instructors Frank Cascarano and David Marasco are gearing up to create fire using mirrors, drop eggs without breaking, blow smoke from their mouths, lie on beds of nails and break concrete blocks perched on a board balanced on their stomach. It's all part of "The Physics Show," which they'll be performing Dec 20-21 and Jan 3-4 and 10, 2026, at Smithwick Theatre on the Foothill campus in Los Altos Hills.

Stemaide's goal is to bring science and technology skills to all young Africans. Started in 2022 in Ghana, it has developed a science kit that will work in areas without the internet. "We behave differently when we're anxious or when we're experiencing fear, versus when we are feeling courageous. And mice do the same," explained Alexandra Klein, postdoctoral researcher at UCSF, during a lab tour, adding that there are multiple experiments conducted in the lab to analyze a mouse's behavior - all this to understand human brain functions better and potentially cure diseases. "They want to make sure every student has a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset."
