Every day, around nine Australians end their lives; three-quarters of them are men. That is a shocking statistic. But nothing can prepare you for the shock when that statistic includes someone you love. One day in mid-2013, my dad became one of the nine. After doing a heroic job bringing up five kids and helping raise a growing collection of grandkids, he killed himself in the garage of his rented Kirrawee home. It broke me in ways I am still dealing with.

"I was jogging in Clissold Park when I heard a loud popping noise at first it sounded like a firecracker. I turned around but didn't see anything unusual. I looked across the playing fields, where children were still running around, and since no-one was panicking, I thought maybe I was overreacting. I put my headphones back in, but then I heard the same sound again. This time I felt something wasn't right."

A man who was found dead on the Bridgeview Trail in Oakland's Oakmore neighborhood died by suicide, the Alameda County Coroner's determined after an investigation. The 36-year-old man, who The Oaklandside is not identifying, was found unresponsive by a parkgoer on June 30 just off the popular trail, which winds along a hillside above Sausal Creek in Dimond Canyon. Oakland police, firefighters, and paramedics with Falck responded to the scene and cut the man down from a tree, according to police records.

Many thousands of people have suffered serious financial detriment. Many businesses and homes have been lost, bankruptcies have occurred, marriages and families have been wrecked.

"Today, the body of former Transport Minister Roman Starovoyt was found in his private car with a gunshot wound in the Odintsovo district. The main version [considered] is suicide," it added.
