Tu grew up near the Jialing River and often swam there as a child. After studying in other cities in his youth, Tu returned to Chongqing for university. The Chongqing of today is different from the Chongqing of Tu's childhood and these images are an effort to record those changes-to tell the story of the riverside from his perspective and memory. While initially noting the distinct shift in urban architecture, Tu began to notice other things like increased congestion, environmental pollution, and poverty:

In the southwest of the city of Tubingen, the historic center of Derendingen is undergoing a period of transformation. Once shaped by its ribbon-like development, the area now faces a mix of renovation, repurposing, and selective densification.
Text description provided by the architects. The road that borders the south side of the site is a culvert that was once the old Kanda River, which meandered through this area. This natural river was modernized for flood control and was slightly rerouted to become a straight, artificial river running north to south. Meanwhile, the original river was landfilled and turned into a narrow street, and the surrounding area was developed into residential land.
Often overlooked in favour of the glossy green tea plantations, quaint south coast beach towns and the Kandy to Ella train ride that make up much of most travellers' itineraries, Colombo has been quietly transforming without fuss and fanfare for decades. Today, with plenty of intriguing cultural spaces to visit, as well as top-notch restaurants, like Gini, and cool bars to hunt out (don't miss Uncle's), it's deserving of at least a few days, if not longer.
