15 hours agoHow to style a TV above a fireplace without ruining the room
Mounting a TV above a fireplace requires planning to manage heat, viewing angles, and proportions for a safe, comfortable, and stylish setup.
After Napoleon's 1798-1801 Egyptian campaign, his publications of its scholarly findings, including engravings of Egyptian styles, were widely disseminated. A fashion for Egyptian styles and military camp furnishings swept Europe and inspired Friedrich's architect, Nikolaus Friedrich von Thouret. "This is probably the only palace in Europe to have a drapery room remaining to this extent of completeness, including fabric, trimmings, and furnishings to match," says Anu-Susanna Ventelä, a textile conservator at the State Palaces and Gardens (SPG) of Baden-Württemberg. Exposed to years of soil, dust, sunlight, pollution and even insect retardants, the silks, originally turquoise and now a faded blue-green, needed cleaning, she says.
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. More people are stepping away from the minimalist, open-concept kitchens that seemed to dominate design decisions for the past two decades. We want to personalize our kitchens, considering how much time we spend in them. Plus, many of us are seeking cozy comforts in today's world. This has revived past trends like choosing charming 1990s kitchen color schemes over monotonous monotone and collecting secondhand cookware and serveware to mix modern and vintage kitchen items.

I have painted (and written about painting!) countless walls in countless colors over my years as both a renter and homeowner. And when I say countless, I really mean countless: A typical room in my house may be painted no less than four times over the course of two years. It's even an ongoing joke with friends when they arrive, acting shocked to see the living room is still the same color as the last time they visited.
"Yes, you can paint a log burner," shares Joanna Humphreys, Fire & Stove Specialist at Direct Stoves. "However, it's important that you use the right type of paint. Due to the very high temperatures log burners can reach, normal household paints would likely bubble, discolour and flake off. Instead, always use heat-resistant paint when painting your log burner for the best results."
"At its core, a smart heating system uses a thermostat connected to your boiler and Wi-Fi," picks up Stephen Day. "This allows you to control your heating from your phone, tablet, or even by voice through assistants like Alexa and Google Home."

Sharing with followers, Martin revealed armfuls of freshly picked kale harvested straight from his raised garden beds. He called kale "the easiest veg to grow and so good for you," while also giving a quick tip on how to make it tasty, by removing tough stems and massaging it with olive oil and salt.
"how to retain the original elements, create a showcase for lighting and freestanding furniture work, and add modern interventions and built-ins that would work with the character of the old structure. Even when you put new things in, you're not totally starting from scratch."
For example, Jake Wilkinson and his partner, Megan, liked their living room's bay window and central fireplace - but they weren't keen on the fact that the original fireplace had been replaced with a faux gas one. They also weren't in love with the "awful '80s patterned carpet" or the textured ceiling (with the exception of the lovely ceiling medallion). "It hadn't been changed since the 1980s from the previous owner," Jake says of the overall vibe of the room.
I went for a casual relaxed look, ignoring tools of symmetry. I think Paris is all about collecting. Funny enough, the flat didn't have a functioning kitchen; the flow was cut as the main bathroom opened into a corridor. I wanted to achieve a careless, cosy atmosphere, with no intended design as if pulled together by generations no agenda, no rules. A place where different people could clearly feel they are in Paris, and it is vibrant and different from any other place on Earth.
Individual walk-in shower floor tiles should be four inches or less in order to increase slip-resistance," says Vern Yip, author of the new book Color Pattern Texture: The Foundation to Make Your Home Your Own. "The increased number of grout joints provides more traction. Smaller tiles also more easily conform to the slope of the underlying shower pan to support positive water drainage.
Maree House is a home for a local doctor and her family in Yarraville. The goal was to create characterful spaces with different zones and atmospheres, whilst maintaining flow. The client bought the long block because of its potential to accommodate a lap pool. Being an avid swimmer, it was important for the pool to be functionally accessible for daily swims, as well as a visual feature. An important part of the brief was for each room to have large windows with a garden view. Backyard, courtyards, and balconies ensure there is always a connection outside.
"I could have stripped [the wallpaper] all back, but I was trying to be cost-effective," Callieanne says. "The wallpaper was in excellent condition, so I didn't see a problem in painting over, and it worked out so well." (Perhaps also wise if you're someone, like Callie, who likes to switch up the vibe of a room often. If she tires of this paint color, she can remove the wallpaper and the paint all in one.)
Both shops received a full-scale makeover led by Denver-based multidisciplinary firm BOSS.architecture, with improved visibility and movement between the shops through wider window and door portals. Pigtrain's warm "dusty mauve" walls and lush suspended planters now pop against Milkbox's vibrantly chilly "waterfall" blue. Handmade clay zellige tiles line Pigtrain's new horseshoe-shaped bar and the wall behind it, above which hangs an updated menu board listing espresso drinks, pourovers and specialty beverages such as horchata latte and seasonal pumpkin spice.
During my studies to become a certified Passivhaus designer, my teacher would remind me of the importance of 'going for the low-hanging fruit first.' I have kept this simple sentiment in mind for many projects, so that sustainable choices can be made minimally, or incrementally, to improve overall energy performance. This also guided the decision making for my own home.
Thoughtful lighting design creates ambience, draws attention to details you might otherwise miss, and adds another layer of depth to your interiors. And with more of us investing in statement joinery and built-in cabinetry, shelf lighting has become a design tool that's hard to ignore. Used well, it will not only make your storage work harder but also help your home feel warmer, more inviting and infinitely more stylish.
When she moved to New York City six years ago, she quickly realized it's "a very crazy place." So she would fly off to Bali twice a year to find some solace and to design collections for her celebrity-beloved fashion brand Bronx and Banco. In her search for a creative retreat a bit closer to home, she soon landed on the east end of Long Island.
Good garden lighting ideas can completely transform an outdoor space. They will extend your evenings relaxing out on the patio, make tricksy garden paths safer to navigate, and stop you accidentally trampling through your flowerbeds after dark. And these days, garden solar lights are one of the most popular choices - easy to install, eco-friendly, and wonderfully bill-free (take that energy price hikes).

The initial situation before the conversion was a historic farmstead in the area north of the Danube. The existing ensemble is characterized by two separate building parts: a courtyard area, which was formerly used as living space, and an inn in the house floor (now disused), and an old barn, which had initially served as a pigsty since the 1970s and later as a partially rented area.
