Every year, usually in September, Apple announces a new iPhone. This year was no exception. I've been using the new iPhone 17 Pro for the past couple of weeks. So far, I find it to be an excellent phone. I can recommend it for anyone who likes iPhones, although I almost never recommend people upgrade on an annual basis unless you've got deep pockets or a compelling reason to have the latest tech. Apple has acknowledged that worn MagSafe charging stands in its retail stores are causing marks on the new iPhone 17 Pro models, addressing concerns that emerged within hours of the device's launch. Apple told 9to5Mac that the visible imperfections on demo units are not scratches, but rather "material transfer" from aging display equipment that can be removed with cleaning. (Some users, it's worth noting, say they tried rubbing out the marks on the Apple Store's demo units but "nothing happened," claiming "they're scratches.")

iFixit talked to David Niebuhr, an engineer and professor of mechanical engineering, who has an explanation for why scratches around the iPhone 17 Pro's camera plateau stick out so much with spalling damage that didn't appear in tests of other areas. According to Niebuhr, the problem is the sharp edge of the camera bump where the anodization process isn't as even, as he says, "Apple could have prevented this by making a more gradual curve and avoiding a relatively sharp corner."

YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything, in his durability tests, found that the iPhone 17 Pro series scratches easily, particularly around the sharp edges of the large rear camera module. According to him, the issue lies in the anodized coating, which struggles to adhere to these sharp edges. The problem is especially noticeable on the Blue and Orange variants of the iPhone 17 Pro, where the coating on the edge can chip off with everyday contact from items like keys or coins.
