"We're always deep diving on that," McDaniel said. "We have discussions on what's out there anytime a player gets injured, and then we assess short-term, long-term relative to our own assets. We'll be looking at that. I know (general manager) Chris (Grier) and his staff are as we speak, and there could be potentially be something."
Clelin Ferrell joined the Commanders during Adam Peters' first offseason as general manager. The defensive end did enough for the front-office leader to bring him along from the San Francisco 49ers, but it never looked like it would work out. Despite his struggles and waning reps, Washington gave him another one-year deal, although this time around came with no guarantees attached whatsoever.
The Jacksonville Jaguars released Darnell Savage on Tuesday, one year after signing the veteran safety to a three-year contract in free agency. Savage started 13 games in 2024, but his playing time decreased this season because the Jaguars signed Eric Murray in free agency and veteran Andrew Wingard won the other starting safety spot. Savage was rotating with third-year player Antonio Johnson and rookie Rayuan Lane III as a backup.
Over the last few years, the Patriots have been a team more focused on adding superstar players to their roster rather than already having them on the team. With the exception of a few, like cornerback Christian Gonzalez, not many have been deemed desirable for other teams to call about, which made it surprising to hear that Mike Vrabel and Co. were hoping to get a few trades done before roster cutdowns. It was more surprising to find out who some of those players were, one of whom was longtime starting safety Kyle Dugger.
Wide receiver Hunter Renfrow hadn't given any thought to being cut after the Carolina Panthers wrapped up their preseason last week. The 2021 Pro Bowl selection was forced to on Tuesday when the Panthers released the 29-year-old, who was making a comeback from ulcerative colitis that forced him to miss the 2024 season after being released by the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Washington Commanders had a surplus at the wide receiver position entering the cut-down deadline. Adam Peters had some difficult decisions to make, and some prominent veterans were disposed of by the ruthless general manager despite their best efforts over the summer. One of those parting ways with the franchise is K.J. Osborn. The veteran came into the Commanders off the waiver wire late last season after a serious internal injury to Noah Brown that required kidney surgery.
As the Patriots continue to assess their options ahead of Tuesday's roster cutdown day, the future of Anfernee Jennings in Foxborough remains uncertain. The 28-year-old veteran has said all of the right things about wanting to stay in New England as of late, with the 2020 third-round pick also producing on the field during preseason action (three sacks against Minnesota).
They also knew that if no willing suitor came forward, he'd be released. And yet, Peters still managed to get something back in return. Not for the first time, Peters struck an agreement with his old employers, sending Robinson to the San Francisco 49ers for a sixth-round pick. The third-round selection out of Alabama will back up Christian McCaffrey, providing relief in between the tackles to keep the All-Pro fresh after another injury-plagued campaign in 2024.
