Tim Domett, the creatures episodic supervisor, revealed that the 1979 original movie inspired the use of KY jelly for practical effects in Alien: Earth. He stated, 'We looked to [Alien] for any inspiration around how it should look and the guideline of what we're trying to achieve. [...] They used KY jelly for this.' Domett explained that KY jelly is safe for actors and can easily be cleaned off costumes, adding 'It's just safe for all things, for going to people's faces.'

It's 100% real. Even in Aliens, I think there's a lot of CG, and we're not doing any CG Xenomorph.
